FXMap is a free interactive tool that visualizes reference exchange rates on a world map. You can click any country to see its currency, compare up to 3 currencies side-by-side, and explore purchasing power indexes like the Big Mac Index, Latte Index, and more. Rates are for informational purposes only and are not transaction quotes.

How often are exchange rates updated?

Reference exchange rates refresh approximately every hour from the European Central Bank (ECB) and other open data APIs. The data covers 161 fiat currencies, major cryptocurrencies, and precious metals. See /methodology for details on data sources, update cadence, and limitations.

What are purchasing power indexes?

Purchasing power indexes compare the real cost of everyday items across countries. FXMap tracks six indexes: Big Mac, Latte, Taxi Ride, Coca-Cola, Movie Ticket, and Gasoline. These show what your money actually buys in different countries, beyond just the exchange rate.

How many currencies does FXMap cover?

FXMap covers 161 fiat currencies from 180+ countries, plus major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others. You can compare any currency against any other using reference rates and 30-day trend charts.

Can I compare currencies side by side?

Yes. Select a base currency, then use the comparison feature to add up to 3 currencies. You'll see reference exchange rates, 30-day sparkline trends, percentage changes (1-day, 7-day, 30-day), and purchasing power comparisons across all six indexes.

A small, stable surface for FX and reference data. All endpoints return a consistent JSON envelope with data and meta.source / meta.last_updated / meta.disclaimer. CORS is open to all origins. A soft per-IP rate limit (60 req/min/instance) returns 429 with Retry-After.

Lookup the primary currency for a single country.

GET/api/v1/money-strength

Ranks countries by purchasing power for a given base currency. Combines latest FX rates with a PPP-style affordability index.

Attribution Requirement

Free use of the v1 API requires a visible attribution link to fxmap.app. Acceptable formats include “Powered by fxmap.app”, “FX data: fxmap.app”, or an equivalent link near the data. Exchange rates ultimately come from the European Central Bank via Frankfurter — please credit them where appropriate.

Exceeding the limit returns 429 Too Many Requests with a Retry-After header. All responses include Cache-Control headers for client-side caching.

Get the top gaining and losing currencies over recent periods. Useful for market overview dashboards.
