We converted $100 USD into local currency at today’s exchange rate, then measured how many big macs, lattes, taxi rides, cokes, movie tickets, and liters of gas that buys in every country where we have price data. The result is a global purchasing power map built on reference exchange rates — free to cite, refreshed approximately every hour.

What the data says
Currency strength isn’t the same as purchasing power. The Swiss Franc and British Pound are among the world’s strongest currencies, but $100 converted into CHF in Switzerland buys 10.0× less than the same $100 in Egypt. “Strength” reflects what the currency costs to produce — not how far it travels.
Affordability clusters geographically. Southeast Asia, Latin America, and North Africa dominate the affordable end. Western Europe, the Nordics, and Oceania dominate the expensive end.
Taxi Ride Index has the widest global gap. $100 USD buys 178 taxi rides in 🇪🇬 Egypt, but only 4.3 taxi rides in 🇨🇭 Switzerland — a 41.1× spread, wider than any other index we track.
The “how strong is my currency?” question is the wrong one. For travelers, remote workers, and expats, the right question is what does my money buy when I get there? That’s what this index measures.
Methodology
- Exchange rates: Sourced daily from the European Central Bank and open.er-api.com at 06:00 UTC. Last refresh: October 18, 2026.
- Prices: Reference values compiled from The Economist’s Big Mac Index, Numbeo cost-of-living data, and GlobalPetrolPrices.com. Reviewed quarterly.
- Calculation: For each country, units-per-$100 = (100 USD × local rate) / local price. The overall score is the geometric mean of each country’s ratio-to-global-median across all indexes where we have data.
- Scope: 39 currencies across 62 countries. Countries with fewer than two indexes of price data are excluded.
- Limitations: Reference prices are illustrative — actual local prices vary by city, brand, and season. Countries with hyperinflation (e.g. Argentina, Venezuela) may show stale price data; rankings should be treated as approximate.
